Life is All About Choices (August 16, 2009)
For Hong Siew Hui, a 21 year old girl who used to be called as the “Elephant Girl”, her life definition is all about choices. She chooses to live; she chooses to accept who she is; she chooses to move forward; she chooses to live life to the fullest.
When I first met Hong Siew Hui in her house, I was sad to see she had to bear with a big tumor on her face for years. I just could not imagine the pain she had gone through in the past 18 year and the great courage she had to have to live with all the strange looks or expressions on people’s face when they see her.
She told me that she wanted to live a normal life; she wished to further her study in university. I was very impressed and touched by her positive attitude and determination to pursue to live life to the fullest despite her disease. She is a person who lives with strong determination. She does not care about how people look at her.
I meditated on what she had shared with me. I was in tears. I pondered about her situation. I thought and asked myself, “If I were Hong Siew Hui, would I still live on? If I were Hong Siew Hui, would l I go to school? If I were her, would I have the courage to lead a normal life?” The answers would most probably be “NO”.
I believe many people will say “No “to themselves when they come to a seemingly hopeless situation like Siew Hui. Many people would choose to shy away from the society. Many people would choose to give up in the face of an insurmountable challenge.
As for Hong Siew Hui, she was very determined, she had made her own choice, and she wanted to live on. She did not give up. She believed that when there was a will, there was a way. She did her very best to find ways to solve her life challenges. She sought help from the media to assist her to find a suitable treatment to remove her facial tumor.
The news on Siew Hui’s predicament was published on the local media on the 17 March 2006 with the headline: “Elephant Girl seeking medical advice”. I came across that catchy headline on that very morning. I was shocked to see the picture of Siew Hui. I went on to read the news. The father told the press, “I am very thankful to all the people who wish to donate money to help my daughter. However, I hope very much that the public could advise me which hospital would be able to provide the right treatment for my daughter. Ever since she was four years old, we had been seeking treatment for Siew Hui to no avail; no doctors dare to operate on her.”
At that moment, I had a strong compassion for Siew Hui; I wanted to help her! I was certain that a hospital that I knew of in China would be able to treat her. I supplied the information through the reporter who covered this news. That was how we get connected.
The Doctor came to visit Hong Siew Hui in her house in Kedah. Medical examination was carried out immediately; a fund raising committee was set up. One and a half month later, Siew Hui went to Guangzhou, China for treatment. She was in China for nearly six months. She underwent cryosurgery successfully to have her facial tumor removed. She returned to Malaysia without the facial tumor in December 2006.
Hong Siew Hui is currently studying in the Universiti Utara Kedah. She told me that she wanted to be a professional accountant. I am very proud of her; she knows what she wants in life. With her determination and courage, she has made herself a “life winner”. I strongly believe that she can excel in life. She will be one that is going to touch many people’s life.
From the journey that I had sailed through together with Siew Hui, I learn that, life is full of choices. The choices we make are choices depend on how we view life and how we want our life to be. We must learn to see that life is full of hope, love, joy, achievement and fulfillment. Life will be what you see it to be.
